Laws of the Land
Speech and Press: Freedom of Speech and the Press are the hallmarks of the Republic. To censor speech, no matter how profane, is considered to be unpatriotic and thus is not allowed whatsoever. The only time speech is allowed to be censored is in times of war, in which this is a common practice.
Healthcare: Avalon operates giving people single-payer national healthcare allowing for free choice of hospital and doctor. This is on the principle of National Conservatism in which we care for our countrymen. Healthcare extends to all citizens.
Taxation: Taxes are collected to fund various national projects like repaving roads or our military, our police force, our fighters, and the like. Taxes for the top wealthy 1% of Avalon pay 40% of their income to the government with zero loopholes to exploit for profit. Tax evasion is a serious offense as it violates the spirit of National Conservatism and the principle of the nation being for the greater good.
Abortion and Sex Education: This is not a matter of the state to decide, as such it is perfectly legal to get an abortion. However, abortion rates fall steadily through a comprehensive sex education program that details the inherent dangers of being unsafe through sexual intercourse. As a result of these programs, teen pregnancy is low.
Corporate Power: Like our government, corporate power is kept heavily in check by a series of laws and regulations. Corporations are not people and money is not speech in Avalon. Corporations are institutions and money is property. Corporations are forbidden from donating money into the political process.
Suffrage: Voting is a national right, upon reaching the age of eighteen you are automatically registered to vote. While incarcerated however, you may not vote for the duration of your sentence, once free you may resume having a say in the democratic process.
Welfare: Unlike most, Avalon's social services do not enable recipients to sit idly and be paid for that. No. In Avalon, the social services are all work programs involving maintaining the infrastructure of the nation. Genuinely disabled and elderly people, of course, are exempt from this. The work programs consist of building roads, bridges, highways, and schools for the nation, not a desk job, but a job all the same.
Prisons: The death penalty is not used except in the cases of serial rapists and murderers. The prison system itself is reformed to encourage the incarcerated to take up a means of education to teach them how to be productive members of society.
Warfare: Avalon prefers to engage in diplomacy above all else, however, this is not to suggest that we are a weak nation. We simply understand that war is only a last resort. However, if provoked, our policy is simple: You take out one of our buildings then we take out one of your cities. If you take a city, then we take out your country.
Technology: We simply adore technology as they have useful applications for both military and the civilian life. Technology is a beautiful thing and we always encourage the next Einstein or the next Da Vinci to come forth.
Drug Laws: Largely, we decriminalize the drugs and offer rehabilitation for addicts treating them as sick people as opposed to criminals. Marijuana, Tobacco, and Alcohol are legal for purchase, although, Marijuana and Tobacco can only be purchased by individuals who are 18 and up, and alcohol is 21 and up. Fines for possession of cocaine, heroin, and other "hard" drugs are 500 Aurum and up depending on quantity of the drug.
Education: Schools are a right and as such, school days are near year 'round with two weeks for summer vacation. National and religious holidays are observed and schools are closed. Christmas is considered a National Holiday all the same and two weeks are given for Winter Break.
Liberty Party: A primarily left-wing party, the party is responsible for the founding of the nation. They present to the nation a platform of social-democratic/democratic-socialism. They do not reject the freedoms of a capitalist economy as they have never replaced the economic system; however, they do believe solely in a level playing field for the individual to succeed.
Conservative Party: Unlike the old United States and its views or even those of Mormon Utah, the Conservative Party of Avalon believes that the individual has a right to do as needed and that the taxes are perfectly fine where they are. What the Conservative Party of this day believes in is pragmatic spending, like the Liberty Party; they disagree wholly with the idea of wantonly engaging in wars of aggression with sovereign nations unless attacked first.
